The Department of Technology Education programme which is the contemporary concept of knowledge driven Vocational Technical Education and Training (TVET) was one of the founding Departments of the Federal University of Technology, Yola in 1981. Since then, it has steadily contributed systematically in the development of competent professionals through pre-service and in-service education and training. In the current Nigerian National Policy on Education 1-6-3-3, this Department provides fundamental and advanced understanding of technological constituents to diverse students populations and scholars. Every aspect of the Department has grown tremendously. The number of students it caters for has grown in leaps and bounds. With strong personnel, physical facilities, well-manned laboratories and workshops the Department stands shoulder-high in spirit, self-reliance and leadership in the world of technology education. A significant component in the students’ programme of study is the industrial work experience scheme (SIWES) that is when students have an opportunity to apply what has been learned in the classroom to a real work environment for assignments of up to 12 calendar months in partnership with appropriate industry, Commerce and business organization before graduation.
The Department of Technology Education exists to provide opportunities for quality globalised knowledge economy based technological education. This is done through acquisition of appropriate knowledge, skills and habitual work habits. It is the philosophy of the Department to integrate all individuals to be entitled to profit from equal technological educational opportunities and its merits to the fullest extent of their capacities. Based on these tents of progressive education, the Department accepts and adopts as its objectives the following premises and the ethic implied therein, the Department shall among others:- (a) Continue to equip potential or practicing technology teachers who do not possess pedagogical qualifications with professional expertise in respective technical options, (b) Strengthen trainees pedagogical competencies, research and development (R&D) skills and community service in contemporary technical problem-solving issues; (c) Improve the students capability in professional practice of technology with managerial responsibilities; (d) Continue to update career technology teachers and technology teacher educators with modern theory and practice of professional educational studies; (e) Keep students abreast with state of the art knowledge, skills and attitudes to cope with technology advancement in their chosen area of specializations; (f) Fully enable trainees to perform entrepreneurial leadership positions at pre-primary and primary education, pos-primary institutions, tertiary education and adult training as well as at other governmental, private and non-governmental sectors; and (g) Foster a sense of social responsibility, ethical and aesthetic values as well as personal and professional worth to the end that graduates will be able to provide leadership in and beyond the area of their special technical competence.
Graduates of the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes can at various levels be self-employed, job creators or entrepreneurs in addition to getting employment on respective posts as underlisted. (i) Administrators, inspectors, supervisors and managers of technology-based educational institutions; (ii) Administrators and managers of training programmes in related industries; (iii) Planners, Researcher and Development experts in the world of technology education; (iv) Post-primary principals/head teachers, deputy principals and teachers of technology- based courses of study; (v) Teacher Educators; (vi) Managers for policy formulation, implementation and evaluation of sociological responsibilities.
In continuation of its concerned efforts to ameliorate workforce problems at various stages in a nations economy and to offer further training, Higher Education Programmes were initiated in the Department of Technology Education in 2000/2001 session. The Programmes lead to Postgraduate Diploma in Technology Education (PGDTE), and degrees in Master of Technology Education (M.Tech) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) with major areas of study and research as Industrial Technology Education. Other contemporary sustainable development technology driven programmes shall be offered at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Substantial number of developed human capital graduated with any or a combination of PhD, MTech and/PGDTE qualifications from the Department. Special emphasis is made to maintain, extend and improve existing Programmes and develop new programmes for vocational service areas of Technology Modern facilities exists in the Department for the specialization of majors in the competencies which are realistic for actual and anticipated vocational aspects of technological educational opportunities.
Entrance requirements into undergraduate programmes are as stated by JAMB Admission requirements for Postgraduate Programmes are as stipulated in /Regulations for Higher Degree in the Federal University of Technology, Yola.
The period of study for B.Tech (Ed) Programmes is 5 years or 10 semesters for UME candidates. It is also 4-year or 8 semesters for direct entry students.
Graduation Requirements Before each student graduates with undergraduate degree or from PG class he/she must have successfully completed all graduation pre-requirement’s as prescribed by the senate of the Federal University of Technology, Yola.
