The School of Management came into being in 2000/2001 academic session. It consists of two departments: Management and Information Technology. At that time economics was one of the four programmes being run under department of management. However, in 2004/2005 academic session department of Management was splitted into two departments: Economics and Management. At that time department of economics was running the following programmes: Economics, Accounting, Banking and Finance. Then in 2005/2006 Economics became a single entity with the establishment of full fledge department of accounting and the transfer of banking and finance to management. The separation facilitated rapid development of the Economics Department because new members of staff have been appointed into the department while there are other senior members of staff either as visiting lecturers or on sabbatical leave

In furtherance of the philosophy of the programme, the B. Sc degree in Economics seeks to achieve the following objectives: • Provide training in the principles of economics and their application appropriate to the type of degree concerned: single, joint and combined studies; • Stimulate students intellectually through the study of economics and to lead them to appreciate its application to a range of problems and its relevance in a variety of contexts; • Provide a firm foundation of knowledge about the workings of an economy and to develop the relevant skills for the constructive use of that knowledge in a range of settings; • Develop in students the ability to apply the analytical tools, knowledge and skills acquired to the solution of societies economic problems. • Equip students with appropriate tools of analysis to tackle issues and problems of economic policy; • Develop in students, through the study of economics, range of transferable skills that will be of value in employment and self-employment. • Provide students with analytical skills and the ability to develop simplified frameworks for studying the real world. • Provide students with the knowledge and skill base, from which they can proceed to further studies in Economics, related areas of in inter-disciplinary areas that involve Economics; and • Generate in students an appreciation of the economic dimensions of wider social and political issues.

UTME Candidates for admission into degree in Economics should possess a Senior Secondary School Certificate, General Certificate of Education, NECO or their equivalents with at least five credit passes, at not more than two sittings including Mathematics, English Language and Economics and any two of Commerce, Government, Biology, Agricultural science, Geography, Accounting, Physics, Chemistry. In addition, candidates must have acceptable POINTS in UTME. b) Direct Entry Candidates for Direct Entry admission shall possess five Credits in GCE, SSCE, NECO, or their equivalents, of which at least two shall be at Advanced Level, provided that such passes are not counted at both levels of the examination. For emphasis, credit passes in English Language, Mathematics and Economics are required. 4.0 Duration of programme a) UTME Four (4) Years. (b) Direct Entry Three (3) Years.
